family-owned, community focused

CrossFit KOA is a family-owned gym built around the belief that fitness is better when you’re surrounded by people who want to see you succeed.

Chris recently took ownership of CrossFit KOA, a long-standing community gym he’s excited to continue growing for years to come. A CrossFit athlete for more than 15 years and a coach for the past 8, Chris is passionate about strength, fitness, and helping people become the best version of themselves—both inside and outside the gym.

Together with his wife and two kids, Chris is proud to call this community home. Their goal is to build on everything that has made KOA special while creating an even stronger, more welcoming place where people of all ages and fitness levels can show up, work hard, build confidence, and feel like they belong.

When I first found CrossFit more than 15 years ago, I thought I was in pretty good shape and expected to dominate right away. I was quickly humbled. What hooked me was realizing that feeling never completely goes away. There’s no finish line in CrossFit. As you get stronger, faster, and more skilled, the challenge grows with you.

I’ve now spent more than eight years coaching and am a CrossFit Level 1 and Level 2 certified coach. As a coach, my job is to teach, encourage, challenge, and help you see progress you may not have thought was possible.

As the owner and Head Coach of CrossFit KOA, I want to build a gym where people feel known, supported, and challenged. Whether you’ve never picked up a barbell or you’ve been training for years, there’s a place for you here.

Owner & Head Coach

Jason (Jay) Goldberg

I found CrossFit back in 2014 while living in Staten Island, NY, and quickly became hooked. Like everyone who starts CrossFit, I had plenty of trials and tribulations while learning the movements, figuring things out, and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Over time, CrossFit became a huge part of my life, and I eventually became a coach at a local box in Staten Island.

I moved to Cranford, NJ in 2022 and have been a member of CrossFit KOA ever since. I live in Cranford with my wife and our two daughters. I really enjoy teaching and helping people get better, whether they’re experienced athletes looking to improve or someone walking into a CrossFit gym for the very first time. Coaching athletes of all ages and abilities is something I truly enjoy, and there’s nothing better than seeing someone learn a new movement, get stronger, or accomplish something they didn’t think they could do.

I started CrossFit in 2012 while looking for a way to get more explosive for Muay Thai, drank the Kool-Aid almost immediately, and started coaching not long after. I earned my CrossFit Level 1 and Level 2 early on, but what has kept me coaching all these years is helping people move better, train harder, and stop cutting corners when they think I’m not looking. My coaching style is equal parts sarcastic, demanding, and invested—I’ll give you a hard time, but I’ll also do everything I can to help you improve. These days I’m less interested in chasing PRs and more focused on building my body instead of destroying it: training hard, training smart, using every useful tool available, and making each session a step toward a better version of myself.

Coach

Igal Ghitelman

I’ve been doing CrossFit for about 10 years, ever since my brother and I did a Spartan MMO Race and I decided the logical next step was to voluntarily suffer in a gym. I love lifting, the community, and pretending I’m not quietly competitive. These days, I’m mostly focused on survival, avoiding injuries, and accepting that my younger self had absolutely no idea what she was getting into. I enjoy cleans, erasing the chalkboard like it’s my personal responsibility, cooking, and spending my free time shuttling my two boys (11 and 15) to soccer and hanging out with Igal.

Coach

Joscelyn Rios

I earned by CrossFit Level 1 certification in 2018 and started coaching at KOA soon after. Before that, I instructed under Yoshisada Yonezuka at Cranford Judo Karate Center for ten years.

I love working with everyone who walks through the door — brand-new athletes, seasoned CrossFitters, adults, and teens alike. My philosophy is simple: work hard, have fun, and don't be afraid to try something that might not go perfectly on the first attempt (or the second).
